Starting in early April this year, several cases of swine flu were reported in Mexico and the illness has slowly but surely been making its way north and now east. Swine flu is a strain of influenza virus that normally only infects pigs, hence the name. Tons of pigs get this illness each season and transmission to humans is very rare. A 2-year-old girl came into my office last week and before I even went into the exam room I knew she was sick. She was coughing nonstop, literally. In the five minutes or so between when she was brought into the room and the time I walked in, no more than 20 seconds had passed without a dry hacking cough. Poor girl.
She had been up for the previous two nights coughing like she was in the office, not eating much, feverish and much quieter than
