Should thumb sucking be stopped?

Babies have huge sucking needs. Until they have other ways to soothe themselves, babies will do whatever it takes to be able to suck.

Often babies find their fingers, fists or thumb pretty early on and most babies will give up their sucking by age 2 or so. A few will continue to suck their fingers or thumb beyond age 3. Many parents are concerned about this behavior and want to know how to get him to stop.
