FAQS
ABOUT CORONAVIRUS

SHOULD MY CHILD HAVE HER WELL VISIT RIGHT NOW?

YES. WE HAVE SET ASIDE THE MORNINGS FOR WELL VISITS AND WILL NOT BE SEEING ANY SICK CHILDREN DURING THAT TIME. WE HAVE HOURLY DEEP CLEANING REGIMENS IN PLACE IN ADDITION TO OUR REGULAR SANITIZING BETWEEN PATIENTS. KEEPING YOUR CHILD ON TRACK FOR WELL VISITS IS SAFE AT THIS TIME.

SHOULD I CANCEL MY TRAVEL PLANS?

IF YOU ARE TRAVELING TO AN AREA OF THE WORLD IDENTIFIED BY THE CDC AS BEING HIGH RISK THEN YOU SHOULD CANCEL. CRUISE TRAVEL IS ALSO NOT RECOMMENDED AT THIS TIME. WE ARE RECOMMENDING THAT TRAVEL BE POSTPONED UNLESS IT IS ESSENTIAL.

MY CHILD HAS FEVER AND COUGH, I WANT HIM TESTED FOR COVID19. WHERE CAN I TAKE HIM?

WE SUGGEST YOU CONTACT OUR OFFICE FIRST. WE ARE SCREENING CHILDREN VIA TELEMEDICINE APPOINTMENTS AND CAN HELP YOU DECIDE IF A COVID19 TEST IS RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD. THERE ARE NOW SEVERAL WAYS TO GET TESTING DONE AND WE CAN TALK YOU THROUGH THE PROCESS IF NEEDED.

CAN I BRING HIM TO THE OFFICE FOR YOU TO CHECK HIM OUT?

MAYBE. WE ARE FIRST SEEING ALL PATIENTS WITH FEVER, COUGH, OR RUNNY NOSE VIA TELEMEDICINE VISITS BEFORE DECIDING WHETHER TO BRING THEM TO THE OFFICE. THIS ENSURES THE SAFETY OF THE FRAGILE KIDS WE SEE AT BIRMINGHAM PEDIATRICS. IT ALSO MAKES SURE THAT WE ARE IN THE RIGHT PROTECTIVE GEAR TO ENSURE WE DON’T SPREAD ILLNESS UNNECESSARILY. WALK INS ARE SUSPENDED AS OF TUESDAY, MARCH 17TH TO ENSURE THAT WE CAN CONTROL THE OFFICE ENVIRONMENT.

SHOULD MY CHILDREN VISIT THEIR GRANDPARENTS WHILE THIS OUTBREAK IS GOING ON?

AS LONG AS YOUR CHILD IS HEALTHY, WITHOUT ANY SIGNS OF ILLNESS, VISITING RELATIVES SHOULD BE FINE.

WHAT CAN I DO TO DECREASE THE CHANCE OF MY KIDS COMING HOME AND SPREADING ILLNESS IN MY HOUSE?

ONCE SCHOOL IS BACK IN SESSION, TAKING OFF ALL CLOTHES, WASHING HANDS AND FACE, AND LEAVING BACKPACKS OUTSIDE IF POSSIBLE ARE GOOD FIRST STEPS. DO LAUNDRY FREQUENTLY DURING THE OUTBREAK AND WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER HANDLING THE CLOTHES. KIDS SHOULD DO THIS AFTER RETURNING FROM PLAYDATES/PARTIES/OUTINGS WITH FRIENDS TOO IN THE MEANTIME.

SHOULD I WEAR A MASK NOW WHEN I AM IN PUBLIC?

PROBABLY NOT. SINCE INFECTED DROPLETS CAN SPREAD INTO ANY MUCUS MEMBRANE INCLUDING THE EYES, RISK REMAINS UNLESS YOU ARE WEARING A PROPERLY FITTED N95 MASK AND A FACE SHIELD. IF YOU ARE PARTICULARLY HIGH RISK AND THE ILLNESS BECOMES WIDESPREAD IN THE COMMUNITY, YOU ARE BETTER OFF STAYING HOME AND LIMITING YOUR CONTACT WITH OTHERS.

WHAT ABOUT PLAYDATES? GOING FOR WALKS OUTSIDE? MY OLDER KIDS HANGING OUT TOGETHER WHILE THEY ARE OFF SCHOOL?

ALL OF THESE ARE FINE AS LONG AS THE GROUPS ARE SMALL AND THE PEOPLE INVOLVED ARE WELL. SOCIAL DISTANCING IS TO DECREASE BIG GROUPS FROM BEING NEAR EACH OTHER BUT NOT NECESSARILY KEEP US LOCKED UP IN OUR HOUSES. SHORT ERRANDS, SMALL GATHERINGS OF FRIENDS, AND PLAY DATES CAN ALL STILL HAPPEN, AS LONG AS EVERYONE IS WELL.
